You did it! You’ve booked a photo session and now the big question is: WHAT DO YOU WEAR!? It gets even more complicated when you have more than just yourself to plan for as far as colors, vibe, and functionality. Are you planning a portrait session for yourself or an extended family session with 20+ people? Here are some ways you can take your session to the next level with some planning and strategic styling!
Let me sing it from the mountaintops: colors are one of the most important aspects when styling your session! You want to choose colors you look and feel great in but it is also so important to consider how those colors will look when you print or use your images. Are you planning to hang these gorgeous new images in your home? Then, you’ll want to think about your home interior and what colors would pair nicely. It is almost easier to decide which colors to avoid first and then go from there!
Say you plan to use these images as wall art and the room you have in mind is a palette of neutrals, navy, and mustard yellow. Them, you’ll want to avoid colors like red, purple, orange or bright pink. This same idea can be applied to planning your holiday cards or save the dates! Consider getting color inspiration by looking through some templates and designs to help you make some choices! This is always my first recommendation to my clients anytime they’re not sure where to start.
The next thing to consider is the vibe of your outfits! Do you want to dress up or go for a more casual comfy look? Do you envision capturing romantic and whimsical images or are you wanting to capture something that looks more like your unique day to day style? Thinking about these different visions for your session will help you choose whether to be looking for a flowy dress with lots of movement or the right pair of jeans with a flattering slouchy sweater. See what I mean? Perfect! The vision is hopefully becoming clearer! You have the freedom to dream up whatever YOU want! Have fun with it and express your beautiful self so we can create images you’re going to be glad you invested in!
Finally, I always love to stress the importance of choosing outfits that are functional! During your session, you won’t be standing in front of a mirror, stiff, holding your body in just the right pose or angle. Far from it my friend! You can expect to move and your outfit should be ready to do that with you! If you were to put your arms up, would your shirt come untucked making you worry about showing your midsection or undershirt? When you turn the wrong way, would a part of you make an appearance that you’d rather have covered (use your imagination here lol)? If you were to dance or spin around, would you fall over in those 6 inch heels? ALL major things to consider! Be sure you can work it IN your outfit without coming out of it! That’s a whole different kind of session people! That being said, I’m here for it!
After years of seeing waredrobe malfunctions, color no nos, and outifit choices that just didn’t look like they were from the same century…you’re best to take my word for it! I’m always excited and eager to help my clients look and feel their best for their photos! I’ll be just a click away should you have any questions or want more info! As always, you do you boo!
Til next time, cheers!
So basically, you’re saying we nailed it lol 😆
You always give the best advice for outfits!
